Lent is arriving in less than 48 hours!!
Prayer, sacrifice and almsgiving are the way we join our Lord on His way to Calvary. Have you prayed about what God is asking you to give up this Lent? Do you have a plan in place? Do you have your resources ready to go?
I am asking an awful lot of questions for Monday aren’t I? I have only had one cup of java this morning, I promise you. Still the questions have been asked. What say you, my peeps?
Are you ready?
Lent has always been an especially trying time for me. Every single year in recent memory has brought about some unanticipated and unplanned for struggle. It’s like God looks at my Lenten plans each year, smiles sweetly shaking His head and goes “Um no. We can do better Mary Beth. We can do better.”
Then there is wailing and gnashing of teeth as my world collapses around me and I am buried under worry and regret. Oh yeah…Lent is always the BEST time.
Not so much.
This year I thought I would try something new. I though I would just be quiet and do my job every day with a smile and no complaint. Like, none. No complaining at all.
What does this look like you ask?
Well, it means making dinner every single night. No take-out or frozen pre-made stuff. ALL the food fro scratch. Simple meals made with love and no desserts. It also means doing the dishes. As amny of you know, Jerry and I made a deal 28 years ago. I cook, he does the dishes. This Lent will allow me the opportunity to serve my husband while doing one of my most dreaded tasks. Dishes! Blech!
“Doing my job” also means ALL the household chores that I scoff at. ALL of them from folding laundry, PUTTING IT AWAY THE SAME DAY, vacuuming the stairs, going through the clutter and massive amounts of paper work strewn throughout the house, mopping floors, cleaning bathrooms EVERY WEEK ( I die one million deaths), and anything else domestic that I am supposed to be doing anyway but have spent most of my adult life trying to avoid.
You might be thinking “But Mary you that’s not a sacrifice. You are supposed to being doing those things for your family already.” I know, but I am pledging to actually do them and SMILE the entire time.
Did you see that? SMILING. NO COMPLAINING.
Yes, a grown up I am not. At least not yet. In 40 days I shall be having won Lent!! I know, it’s not a game. It’s a solemn time in the church. Time to pray, seek silence, give alms and sacrifice. I will be undertaking a few more things as well, but those I shall keep to myself. Jesus knows what’s what and my desire to spend these next six weeks walking closely with him has grown in the past few years. Remember, He has His own plan for my Lent. Can’t wait to see what happens this year…or maybe I can.
Before I go, I have got to share some awesomeness. The Pray More Novenas team (Hi John Paul and Annie!!) has provided a wonderful on-line Lenten Retreat called The Pray More Lenten Retreat. There are four fabulous speakers and sixteen video talkes. There are transcripts to each one and discussion questions. You can watch them whenever you want my friends. Think of it as your own little Lenten retreat that you can attend in your pj’s if you want. How awesome is that? Church in pajamas!
The talks will be released Ash Wednesday!! All you have to is go sign up at The Pray More Lenten Retreat and the talks will appear in your email inbox this week. I hear that one of the speakers gave an awesome talk about how God Makes All Things New and Suffering With Joy. Such depth. Such words of wisdom.
Oh wait? Snap! That’s ME!! So honored to be a part of this years The Pray More Lenten Retreat team. I prayed over these talks for months y’all and even though my perfectionist-in-recovery self sees many flaws, I pray that you will view them with an open mind and an open heart to what Jesus is trying to work within you this Lent.
It’s going to be a wonderful lent. I just know it. Not an easy Lent mind you but a fruitful one.
As for me and my non-complaining domestic self, I am working on a new series for you all beginning next week “The Stations of the Cross Revisited”. Two to three stations a week will be shared here along with a little explanation, devotional and prayer prompt. It’s yet another opportunity to walk along the road to Calvary with Jesus. I pray the words land on fertile soil and you enjoy them.
I’m also continuing with my What I Wore posts. Y’all seem to really love those so why not. There will be a “Meatless Friday” thread. These recipes will be published on Thursdays giving you time to get the ingredients in time for Friday night supper. I’ll chime in with a “What the heck is Mary doing with her life these days” post later this week as well. Look for additions to the writing and speaking pages too.
So much going on, and hopefully, ALL of it good.
Head on over to The Pray More Lenten Retreat page y’all. Sign up and get ready. Lent is coming at ya!
What are you doing for Lent? What’s the plan man? Share in the comments. I would love to cheer you on.
Blessings and Grace,
