“You’re always wearing your Mary smile. Your life is so hard. How do you remain so joy-filled?”
The other day, someone I’ve known for a long time asked me this question. It startled me because I don’t always feel joyful. And if you ask my husband, he could name several instances in the last seventy-two hours where I did not have on my Mary smile. So to say I was confused by the question is an understatement.
Not sure how to respond, I laughed and told my friend that I am not always happy or joy-filled. I am human, after all. But she challenged me by saying that she never “saw me without a smile on my face.” And she kept asking how I remained cheerful despite all the challenges my family has faced.
